Summary

In a prologue section, Evie greets a moth that lands on her arm. She sees the snake, whom she does not trust, but then follows a group of moths as they fly away. She comes to a portion of the woods that smells like someone has been making drugs and gives up the hope she does not even realize she had.

In Chapter 1, Jeanette and Ree were cellmates in the Dooling Correctional Facility for Women. Jeanette was in jail for killing her husband. Ree was in for selling drugs. Jeanette noticed a scar on Ree’s forehead and thought it had been caused by a man.
