America
The United States of America, with its centuries-long history of racial tension, is the broad-strokes setting for the play. The so-called American Dream, with its emphasis on opportunities and/or entitlements for / of success for all individuals plays a key, if implied, role in defining the identities and intentions of ambitious researchers Teá and Patricia. As such, this also means that this aspect of the play's setting is a component of its overall thematic consideration of prioritizing the individual self.
Virginia
The Southern state of Virginia is a more specific of the play's setting. Virginia is one of the states with the most deep-rooted relationship with slavery. This makes it a powerful, and pointed, component of the play's exploration of how blackness, and specifically that of the black characters, struggles to escape the long, debilitating shadow of slavery in America, and particularly in the American South.
