Chapter 8 Summary
In Chapter 8, Slake's breakfast consists of sugar cubes and ketchup on saltines. His life is not about a balanced diet; it is about filling the void. It is the Christmas rush. The lunch counter manager approaches him. Slake is scared because the waitress gives him extra food. The manager asks if Slake wants a job to mop up the floor after the rush. In exchange, the manager will give him a good meal. Slake says yes. Slake takes a lot of pride in sweeping and mopping.
