Prejudice and Intolerance
After she receives the download procedure, Lia finds herself encountering prejudice and intolerance at almost every turn. When her parents bring her home from BioTech they are met by "Faithers" who chant slogans and carry signs with the message that "Skinners" are an abomination, that they are unnatural and not part of God's plan, and that Lia and her parents are damned. A short time later her network zone provider terminates her account without warning, stating that the company has decided that recipients of the download procedure are, for all intents and purposes, deceased and they will no longer provide service to them. Strangers including Auden's father refer to Lia as "it", and refuse to have anything to do with her because she is different from them.
