Beauty is only skin deep
This adage is an overriding theme in the story and is the catalyst that drives the entire story. Pella Frann is taught from an early age that her beauty is the ticket out of her ordinary life. She apparently struggles toward the goal of being a supermodel and when she arrives, she is unable to enjoy her success for fear of losing her beauty, which she sees as her only asset. As time passes, Pella finds herself unable to cope with the idea that she's aging. What most people would consider the natural progression of time, Pella sees as her downfall. There comes a time when she absolutely loses the ability to cope and apparently has a nervous breakdown. She attacks Reece and leaves her horribly scarred.
