Chapter 13 Summary
Chapter 13 flashes back a few hours to the time that Billy Tuve leaves with his uncle to return to Second Mesa. Joanna follows the pair from the El Rancho Motel to Billy's place and parks in a Juniper copse to observe from afar with her binoculars. While she is waiting, she reflects on her life and her mission. She realizes that, although she didn't know anything about John Clarke until her mother died, she feels that it has been her destiny to seek revenge for the way her mother was treated. She grew up in Montana with the belief that her real father had been killed in Vietnam, and she always wondered why her mother had remarried a rich old man with a limousine and a chauffeur. Before her thoughts take her deeper, however, Billy's uncle drives off, and his mother comes out...
