Chapters 13 and 14 Summary
Sloane and Juan leave the Oregon in a modified lifeboat stocked with enough supplies to last forty people for a week if necessary. It is after midnight when they approach Swakopmund, and Juan suggests they go to Sandwich Bay and wait until morning to talk to Papa Heinrick again. Sloane agrees and twenty minutes later they are pushing through the reeds to where Heinrick's cabin is. Juan smells smoke, and hurries to find the cabin on fire and the boat half sunk and ablaze as well. The screams have him launching himself off the lifeboat's cabin but before he can get to the small cabin of Heinrick's, a bow runner comes around the isle and begins firing. He manages to avoid them by returning to the water and swimming behind their vessel, coming up to shoot at them. The bow runner...
