Summary
In Chapter 8, Michael was notable among the owners of the dead horses because he had a criminal history from his youth. Charles and Louise Elton, who owned the stables from which four of the dead horses had come, fit the hermit’s description of the couple who buried the horses.
Albert Cole, the farmer on whose land the horses had been found, had a troubled past. His wife, Grace, had left him and he had pulled his daughter, Rebecca, out of school at about the same time.
In Chapter 9, Rebecca was sitting on a hillside near the field where the horses had been found. Alec had questioned her. She claimed she had found the heads when she was walking her dog. Rebecca’s sneeze startled a snake. Rebecca knew her father would have to kill the snake because there were sheep nearby.
