Summary
In Chapter 1, Sergeant Alec Nichols and an unnamed farmer walk through the farm early one morning. They reach a part of the ground that has been freshly tilled. Alec did not see anything out of the ordinary at first, then he saw a mound of coiled hair. Next, he saw an eye looking up at him from the ground. Alec walked the hundred-foot patch of ground and counted 16 buried heads.
The farmer’s daughter had found the heads. The farmer commented that the deaths were murder, but Alec knew it was only a property crime. The farmer added he did not have horses on his property and did not know where they had come from.
