Summary

Chapter 68 begins: “Inside was Tokyo” (457). Mikami entered the Press Room; it was 10 p.m., and the room was packed with reporters. He thought the room felt “airless” (457). Mikami walked towards Kuramae who he informed about the canceled commissioner’s visit. Mikami told him to tell their local reporters. He reflected on the crowd of reporters gathered and thought that they would reject Ochiai as speaker because “he would be made to declare himself a simple puppet” (459).

Mikami then saw Mikumo across the room; they waved to one another. Mikami tried calling on the phone Amamiya who eventually answered. He apologetically informed Amamiya that the commissioner’s visit had been canceled. Amamiya asked if Mikami was feeling better. Mikami was surprised, and Amamiya reassured him that all was well.

Mikami then called his wife, telling her that he would not be home that night...
