Summary
In Chapter Ten, Mikami drove to visit Mochizuki, retired from the force due to “’personal reasons’” according to official reports (61). As an officer, he had worked on the Six Four case. Mikami wanted information that might explain why Amamiya did not accept the commissioner’s visit.
The narrative then turned to internal action, that of Mikami’s memory. He thought of Motoko Yoshida, Amamiya’s receptionist who received the third call from Shoko’s kidnapper on the sixth of January. The kidnapper told her to tell Amamiya the site and time of the ransom hand-over. That day, Amamiya loaded into a car with a police officer in the backseat with the ransom money packed inside a suitcase. Mikami then remembered step-by-step the stops that Shoko’s kidnapper made Amamiya make before finally delivering the ransom, by throwing the suitcase full of money over...
