Nobody resurrected, everybody still alive, broken, together.
-- Joe
(Man Camp)
Importance: In the final pages of the chapter, Joe's painful memories are replaced by a possible future in which Mandy, Joe and Dustin are together "laughing over milkshakes" (109). Importantly, however, this projection is tempered by reality; Joe is able to integrate his disturbing past with his future. In the end, he is able to see possibilities for a future that is not solely made up of guilt and depression from his memories. He finds in Dustin a kind of make-shift son, and hopes that through this relationship he will be able to bridge the gap between him and Mandy. Essentially, this quote shows that while Joe has not deluded himself into a future which is not tinged with the difficulty of his past, he has also found the ability to see the positive opportunities that lay ahead in his life.
