(Part 1: July: Chapter 1)
Importance: Not long after arriving at the Settle House, July tries to reminisce with September about happier times between them. She recalls instances from the sisters' distant pasts, times in which July feels September was close to her, and wanted to be with her. Yet September dismisses July's happy memories. Though she does not admit it aloud, July wishes she could return to these times together, and to feel the same closeness with September. When the reader learns that September has died, she realizes that July's longing is inspired by her grief.
Mostly she is just there.
