Race to Judgement

Hank Wheeling is introduced as Kate’s best friend and Courtney’s husband, but his introduction omits the fact that he is a black man which at first implies his race is irrelevant, but as the story evolves the author reveals that Hank's race impacts his life in frequently unpleasant and judgmental ways.

In the beginning of this story, Kate's sister Violet accuses her of being uptight when Kate suggests that dating a man would be easier than dating a woman, provided that a person had no preferences either way. Violet is the first to reference how history treated black people as though they had less value than white people, forcing them to ride in the back of buses and attend schools set aside specifically for those of color. This is a direct reference to how black people have been disparaged in the past...
