Summary

Kate has flashbacks of Rosie’s birth and how Violet visited the hospital after she was born. Kate remembers the early adjustments to feeding schedules and considers the many firsts in Rosie's life including her first smile, the first time Rosie sleeps in her own room, and her first exposures to the public.

When the time came for Kate to return to the elderly care home and for Rosie to begin going to daycare, Kate noticed for the first time that some of the children had runny noses, and many of the toys appeared to have been chewed on. She dreamed that Rosie was looking out at her from a prison cell. As the weeks passed, Kate’s anxiety came and went so Jeremy took Rosie to daycare in an effort to alleviate some of the stress Kate felt.
