America, 1865

Simon the Fiddler takes place in America at the end of the American Civil War. The war was fought between the Confederates and the Federals, alternately referred to as the Union. Simon is forced to join the Confederate army, where he meets Damon, Doroteo, and Patrick. Colonel Webb, on the other hand, is a Union colonel. He is responsible for the useless attack against the Confederates that occurs right before the surrender, showing how the Civil War felt extremely personal to some people.

The shack

The shack where the band stay in Galveston represents their first real home after the war. The small shack is divided into four corners: one for each member of the band. The lack of privacy of the shack forces the band to spend a great deal of time together, bringing them closer and forming a lifelong friendship between Simon, Patrick, Damon, and Doroteo...
