Dr. Matapang
Kevin’s mother, Dr. Matapang, shows the dangers of hubris, especially when faced with another's trauma. Her decision to share Simon’s story is a clear violation of his trust. Yet, she only does it because she believes building support is what is best for him. This, in turn, shows her subconscious belief that she is right and that neither Simon nor his family are capable of processing their trauma without Dr. Matapang’s interference. In the end, she acts as a cautionary tale to the reader, encouraging them to be supportive without dictating how the other person should deal with their emotions.
