Summary

Chapter 10 describes Raleigh’s attempts -- after the birth of Dana -- to get together with Gwendolyn. One weekend, when Dana was nine, she is sent to Opelika, Alabama, where she is looked after by her godmother, Willie Mae. Back in Atlanta, Raleigh proposes to Gwendolyn as the two of them are playing cards. Gwendolyn and Raleigh then drive out to Opelika, and Gwendolyn talks to Dana in private, presenting the possibility that she could be together with Raleigh, or that things can remain as they are. (As this is happening, Raleigh is again doing his odd habit of picture-taking, around Wille Mae’s farm.) Dana decides that she would like things to remain as they are, and then Dana, Gwendolyn, and Raleigh all quietly drive back to Atlanta.

Chapter 11 resumes in the present day, when Dana is in high school. Miss Bunny...
