Importance: This quote is taken from the opening scene of the play, in which Miss Benare talks with the friendly Samant. On one level, it explains why Miss Benare cares as much as she does about teaching. On another level, it foreshadows the attitudes and behaviors of other characters in the play, who later on attack her in much the same way as she describes the attacks here.
