The Village
The Village is the unofficial name of the place where Makina lives with her mother. Although it is only briefly described, it is clear that the Village is both rural and poor. According to one of Makina’s memories, the Village still does not have cell towers or cell reception; thus, all the residents rely on the switchboard to route their calls. It is also implied that many residents of the Village have left, either to go to the Big Chilango (Mexico City) or north (to the United States). Thus, the Village is a symbol of the draining process of urbanization, as it is felt in rural areas.
