Summary
At night, it grows cold and Makina sleeps inside an ATM booth. When it is light, she walks past a restaurant and spots the youngster from the bus, working and whistling. He still wears a bandage on his finger. The boy invites Makina into the restaurant and brings her to a pale, thin woman working with a pile of red peppers. She remembers Makina’s brother, as well as a sad-looking anglo woman who passed by the restaurant with the promise of a job. According to the woman, Makina’s brother went with her and never returned.
Makina rushes towards the house where her brother apparently went. When she knocks at the door, a thin black man in a purple bathrobe answers the door. While Makina fumbles to explain her disappointment, the man teases her. He explains that the...
