Summary
The next chapter takes place on May 14, 2020 from Waldo’s perspective. He is back at home, applying for internships virtually because of the COVID pandemic (137). Alice died a while ago, and Shenkman is “softer and gentler” than he used to be. Waldo thinks about checking in with Ben; he learned that he helped with his birth and now feels a “secret kinship” with him (139). Shenkman comes into the room and tells him he is “‘selling the house’” (141). He is buying a condo in Florida, but Waldo knows that, since he is being recruited by prestigious schools for graduate school, he will not be moving down with him (142). Through narration, it is learned that Mimi died that night when she was with Waldo in the playhouse in 2010. He sends Ben a text asking if they can meet up (143).
