Chapter 20

John picks Sia up that afternoon. She pleads with him to take her to Elysian Park; and, he agrees. When they go to find Carol, John stands guard a short distance away. Carol’s first piece of news is that Tito is talking a great deal. Carol says that when she began searching for Sia, she found a “very nice housing center.” The people there have helped Carol find a job and provide her a small apartment. She also reveals that Patch is on his way to recovery from his injuries. The boys who beat him up were not caught. Carol then asks Sia to catch her up, and Sia is amazed to realize this is the first time anyone has been truly interested in what she’s feeling. Sia tells Carol that she can’t meet the expectations. It feels wrong...
