Summary
Chapter six begins with Agnes waking up after she had blacked out and lit the curtains on fire the evening prior. She goes out into the apartment where her parents are awake and having breakfast with Shuggie. Her parents express regrets over having spoiled Agnes as a child. Her father then beats Agnes with his belt, despite the fact the she is a fully-grown adult. Later that day, Wullie takes Shuggie out to buy him sweets. Agnes goes outside of the building to sun-tan, while also trying to avoid Lizzie who is lounging nearby with other women from the building. Lizzie then upbraids her daughter for immodestly displaying her body while suntanning. They then argue about Agnes' failure as a daughter. Agnes ends the conversation by telling her mother that Shug plans to move her family out of the high-rise.
