Summary

Chapter 1, “Until Now,” opens with Delsie saying everyone knows she does not like surprises but her friend, Aimee Polloch, is saying she has “the best surprise” (1). Aimee then says she has the lead in the play Annie and will be performing at the Cape Playhouse. Their friend Michael Poole has a role as well. Aimee says she needs Delsie's help understanding Annie. She asks Delsie to explain “what it's like … really like … to be an orphan” (2). Delsie cannot hear anything else Aimee says, though she continues to talk. Delsie knows Aimee is right; she was abandoned. However, Delsie realizes she has never thought about that fact until Aimee's question.

Chapter 2 is titled “The Best One Yet.” Delsie and her grandmother, Bridget, get in the car to go to Seaside Heaven, which has several cottages where tourists live over the summer. Delsie rushes ahead...
