Summary

“commence reentry sequence” begins Anderson’s re-acclimation back to the United States. As with any sojourn, her return to the States is not without complications. She finds that English no longer fits in her mouth (118). Danish and English words alternate, representing both her former and present voice. After the trauma she feels as though she has lived “thirteen lifetimes” yet she persevered and survived them all (118). This blending of two languages is represented in the close of this poem: “I heard my old world/filtered through Nordsoens vands/North Sea Water/and saw it in the light of dansk solskin/Danish sunshine” (120). The blending signifies her merging identities. The sea waters serve as a cleansing of the soul, and the sunshine perpetuates growth.
