Summary
At the end of 1975, Pre passes away in a tragic accident. Everyone is stunned, especially Knight and Bowerman. They feel defeated, but decide to honor his legacy by succeeding with Nike.
In 1976, Knight begins to realize how closely tied his personal identity is with that of Nike. He realizes that when an athlete rejected Nike, he felt personally rejected. So, when a runner who almost exclusively practiced in Nikes wore Tigers in the Olympics, Knight feels devastated.
When celebrities begin to wear Nikes casually, so does much of the American population. These are no longer exclusively shoes for exercise, they are shoes for everyday wear. With this change, Knight realizes that their factories no longer have the capacity to support them. They establish factories in Taiwan.
At this point, Bowerman feels left out of Nike and decides to sell most of his original...
