Summary
Chapter 6
The storm comes in the next day. Outside Nailer’s hut, people are rushing to higher ground. Nailer tries to wake his father up, but his father sleeps. Nailer grabs his good luck charms, including the silver earring and good-luck-bag-of-rice. The storm would be deadly, known as a party wrecker or an Orleans Surge. His father is so blown out in sleep by drugs and alcohol that he is immovable. He then sees Pima and her mother trying to lash down a skiff, and he rushes out to help them. As they finish, Pima’s mother, Sadna, suggests they go to a rock shelter higher up, but Nailer protests because his father is asleep. Sadna goes for Richard while Pima and Nailer run up toward the rock shelter, a limestone cave, where they take refuge.
