Summary
In Chapter 18, Jack finds a scrapbook of the hotel’s history while rummaging in the basement. He has often wondered with the hotel’s spectacular location and guest list why it has not done better financially. He is thinking there must be a story in the piles of receipts and papers in the basement when he comes across the scrapbook. An invitation to a dinner and masked ball from the Horace Derwent era of the hotel falls out of the book. As he looks through the scrapbook, Jack begins to connect with the hotel. It has passed through several owners to land in the hands of Derwent again and opened as a place for the Mafia members to play. In 1966, a gang style shooting took place in the Presidential Suite.
