Summary
The chapter titled “Safua” continues.
After her sighting of Safua, Gbessa becomes increasingly upset and distracted, taking out her anxiety on her servants and arguing with Gerald. She tells him that she has recognized the attackers as Vai, and he accuses her of wanting to defend them and betray Liberia. She says she wants neither, but later, when he has been called to Monrovia, she prepares food and talks her way into visiting the prisoners. She eventually learns that the man she thought was Safua is, in fact, his son – the son that she and everyone else in the Vai village had believed to be dead, the result of her curse. After spending a day considering this information, she goes back to the prison when Gerald is again absent, and manages to find out that Safua’s son believes his father has been...
