Summary
When Norman is ten years old, Aragon makes plans to leave Jamaica. Nanni thinks they are finally going to Africa, and prepares Norman for what she believes will be the free life there. On the day they are to set sail, the sounds and smells of Maroon festivals fill the air. When Nanni and Norman arrive on the dock where they are to board their ship, they are shocked to discover that Aragon has planned for them to go to England.
As the wind whispers to her to run, Nanni protests, and is whipped. She tells Norman to run, but he is caught. As the sounds of festival intensify, both Nanni and Norman disappear, frightening the British sailors and leading them to try to leave. Nanni and Norman, still invisible, run for the mountains.
