Summary
In Chapter Twelve, Ouyang and Esen meet the Great Khan’s extravagant hunting party in Hichetu. Esen offers reports from the battles in the south but is confused when the Great Khan dismisses him. The Grand Councilor announces that the Prince of Henan’s army is close to defeating the Red Turbans, neglecting to mention their recent defeat. Esen is crushed at how their leader no longer represents the empire he is protecting. The Military Governor Bolud-Temur arrives, insulting every member of Esen’s group before meeting the Great Khan.
Over time, Ouyang is bothered that the Great Khan’s competitions are often decided by showmanship over skill. After Ouyang bests numerous opponents in sword-fighting, he fights General Zhang who jokes about the Mongol’s love of violent entertainment.
