Importance: This quote is a deceptively fitting summary of much of this novel. In this instance, Alex is talking about how she would become anxious while her mother shirked her responsibilities. The only way Alex could overcome this anxiety was by taking control of the family finances and getting a job. This quote is also a fitting summary of Molly, as she continues to struggle with anxiety.
