Summary
In Chapter 31, "Malia, 2009, Honoka'a," Malia remembered Noa constantly. One day, Kaui caught her smelling Noa's old shirts. She felt Kaui judging her. Kaui said she only thought Malia would not mourn her the same way. Malia still could not understand Kaui.
In Chapter 32, "Kaui, 2009, Honoka'a," Kaui started running with Augie. She felt he was better because of her. Despite this, she grew antsy, feeling like her mother's maid, and father's nurse. Malia refused to acknowledge any improvement in Augie. Kaui saw everything as confirmation the gods had deserted them. One day, a young man at the store, Hoku, introduced himself to Malia. He knew she was Noa's brother, and an engineer. He invited her to help him start his new farm. Wanting a distraction, she accepted. She worked tirelessly, bringing home food to her parents.
