Point of View
Emily Habek presents numerous points of view throughout the novel. As the novel opens, the story is told from the third person perspective of Lewis, making Lewis appear to be the protagonist of the book. He is further framed as the protagonist because he is the one who is transitioning. His life will be the most marked by the transformation. This perspective is important at this point in the novel because the concept of identity is explored as Lewis moves from human to shark and as his cognitions change.
Later in Part 1, the perspective changes to that of Wren. The reader learns about her friendship with the Tiny Pregnant Woman and with Rachel during Wren’s college years. These can only be told following Wren’s perspective because Lewis was not with her at these times. Still, the events that unfold during Wren’s life...
