Chapters 19-21 Summary

After the cholera epidemic ended, life returned to normal in the slum. Karla had stayed for six days helping tend to the sick. Lindsay is low on money and returns to his black market commission work. He learns that Karla is stranded by the floodwater and finds a friend with a boat and goes to rescue her.

Lindsay uses Anand's India Guest Hotel for business purposes and to shower. He wants to take a long hot shower to forget the cholera but finds a very nervous Anand. One of the visitors was not breathing due to a drug overdose. Lindsay revives him. As he leaves the hotel, Ulla, one of Karla's friends, calls him to a taxi and says she needs help. She wants him to go to Leopold's with her after the closing at midnight. He agrees to help her...
