Chapters 6-8 Summary
Lindsay is made to feel at home in Kishan's house. He becomes close to Rukhmabai, Prabu's mother and spends time talking to her when he learns enough of the language. Lindsay learns the family history from her and of the village's defeat of the dacoits, a pack of roving thieves. The villagers re-enact the battle and show him where the confrontations took place.
Prabu's family go out of their way to teach him their customs and language. He works with the men in the fields during the day and adopts the routine of life in the village. His six month stay in the village included the monsoon season. Linday panics at the approaching flood waters from the river and runs to warn the villagers. They send for Prabu and try to calm Lindsay. Prabu explains the village flood-sticks game to him...
