Summary

As Chapter 1 begins, Sierra is in the Junklot working on a mural she is painting on a tower that developers started to build and then abandoned. The local people in the neighborhood hate it. One such person is Manny who has asked Sierra to paint the mural on it. Sierra notices that a nearby mural is fading and now it looks as if a tear is falling from the subject’s eyes. While she is there, Manny receives a phone call. Something has happened to someone he knows named Ol, Vernon, but Manny is not clear as to whether Ol Vernon is dead or not. As Manny leaves, he tells Sierra that she needs to finish the mural soon. Sierra goes home to get ready for the first party of the summer.
