Summary
In Chapter 5.4, Euclide is working in his herbarium when Cécile asks what will happen to Jacques when Euclide and Cécile return to France. Euclide is unable to give a satisfactory answer. More ships arrive in the colony, but none with any message about the possibility of the Count and the Auclairs returning to France. Cécile realizes that she will miss Canada much more than her father will, as she has spent most of her life in Canada. Cécile goes to the home of Bishop Laval to ask for help. Laval says that he will be sure to check up on Jacques regularly and help him in any way possible. Cécile is comforted by this. She hopes to return to Canada someday to see other parts of it.
