Summary
In Chapter 4.2, Pierre visits the Auclairs for dinner one evening. Pierre mentions that he had fallen in love with Jeanne Le Ber when she attended school in Quebec. He is sad that, due to her religious reclusion, he can never marry Jeanne. Jeanne had loved him too and said that she would always remember Pierre in her prayers. Once, when Pierre was in Montreal, he snuck into the church to watch Jeanne while she prayed, thinking she was alone. In Chapter 4.3, Cécile agrees to accompany Pierre on a three-day excursion through the wilderness to visit a friend. Euclide allows Cécile to go on the trip.
