Chapter 10, Grief Summary
Felex Starman, head of Rwanda, has one qualm about the Free People of Earth Constitution, which is turning his troops over to Peter, who is white and American-born, will lead to destabilization. His solution is that Bean should lead his military. In India, occupying Muslims commit atrocities and Virlomi uses it against them. Virlomi films a particularly atrocious slaughter of a family, many of them children, and challenges Alai. "'Come forth from your hiding place, O Caliph Alai, and own your work. Or if it is not your work, then repudiate it. Join me in grieving for the innocent'" (P. 129). Alai decides to leave Damascus to lead his armies and plans to punish those who commit atrocities. Alai's trusted adviser, Ivan, warns him that men like that are not obeying Alai's orders, and that's why these atrocities are happening.
