Summary
Part V is titled London: The Blackfriars. In Chapter 34, Queen Elizabeth is furious because Matthew did not bring Edward Kelley back. She refers to Matthew as Sebastian St. Clair, the name he used when he served Queen Elizabeth's father. She eventually refers to him as “my Shadow,” a nickname indicating his role as her spy. Matthew assures her Edward has not created the philosopher's stone and she sends everyone away except Matthew and Diana. Elizabeth says Rudolf claims Matthew stole a book. Diana steps in, saying “The book is not in our possession” (484) because it is technically in Gallowglass's possession. Matthew suggests the madness that runs in the royal family is affecting Rudolf. Elizabeth believes the philosopher's stone could also make Rudolf immortal and Matthew interjects, saying that if Elizabeth is asking him to make her a wearh, he will refuse. He cites...
