Summary
Part III is titled London: The Blackfriars. Diana and Matthew arrive in London by boat, accompanied by Gallowglass. They settle into rooms at the Hart and Crown, run by Robert Hawley and his wife Margaret. They soon reunite with Matthew's friends, including Henry Percy. Gallowglass says Kit is at a tavern, “trading verses” with a struggling playwright named Shakespeare whose current accomplishment is learning to forge Matthew's signature. One night, Diana wakes to find Matthew and Pierre discussing that a teacher named John Fian was executed for being a wizard. When Matthew and Diana are alone, Matthew holds Diana close and hears the heartbeat of the baby she is carrying. She says she thought she was pregnant, though she was not sure.
