Summary
Chapter 8, "Sept-Tours and the Village of Saint-Lucien," is the first chapter of Part II. Diana and Matthew arrive in France by boat. Diana watches Matthew's attitude change, becoming more of a prince than the scholar she knew in the 21st Century. They travel on horseback through war-torn France, reaching Sept-Tours late one evening. Diana spent time there in the 21st Century, but it is very different in 1590. A vampire named Alain, Philippe's squire, meets them. Diana describes Philippe as “the most breathtaking creature I had ever seen” (108). Philippe has already learned that Diana needs his protection and Matthew clarifies, saying she is not weak but needs protection because she has defied the Congregation's rules. Diana gives him a brief history of her past, including that her mother spellbound Diana because “she knew what was to come” (109). Philippe knows Diana is a time walker...
