Reconciliation of Body and Mind
Throughout the novel, the author uses Darren's attempts to quiet his mind through physical exertion as a means of illustrating the individual's need to reconcile her body and mind to achieve psychic balance. The drama and scandal that arises in North Falls concerning Mr. Tracy stirs Darren's peace of mind, his involvement as well as his attempted avoidance of the situation stirring his already incessant thoughts.
In Chapter 3, several months prior to Mr. Tracy's investigation and death, Darren is already experiencing the tormenting nature of his mind. The expectations of his teachers, peers, and family constantly torture Darren, causing him to doubt both his athletic and academic capabilities.
