Summary
In Chapter 1, the narrator introduces 16-year-old Darren Flynn, a recent addition to the varsity swimming and diving team at North Falls High. Despite his dedication to the sport, what Darren is known for are his good looks and shy manner. Comfortable with his friends, Darren has always been awkward around girls. Every girl at North Falls, however, is enamored with Darren.
In Chapter 2, Darren feels trapped by his thoughts, and all of the sexual and crass words that repeatedly pass through them. On the internet, Darren reads that "Man is a sexual being," and becomes obsessed with the idea, comparing the notion to what he has learned in biology class (5). He even asks his teacher what the point of reproducing ad infinitum is. His teacher dismisses the question. Feeling frustrated and confused, Darren tries to bury his thoughts about sex, and constant feelings...
