Identity
Throughout the entirety of the novel, Lucie grapples with her identity, questioning her origins, her relationships, and her wealth. Lucie struggled as a young girl to adapt to living in either the white or Asian communities because she found herself with a foot in both worlds. She wanted to be seen as Asian enough to fit in with her Asian friends and family as well as also being able to fit in with her White peers. She longs for the comfort of her late father and the home she had made with her family before his death. Interestingly, Lucie’s identity is not rooted solely in her identity as an Asian-American in the same way that other people have been able to create communities along racial lines and feel enhanced sense of identity.
