Sex and the City is set in Manhattan at the end of the twentieth century. It is a fast-paced, bustling city with glittering lights. The narrator warns readers at the beginning that this is not the romantic Manhattan that served as the backdrop for classic love stories and films, but that love has died in New York in the modern age. Everyone is focused on their jobs, apartments, parties, shopping, and here, self-protection and business are the priorities.
