Summary
In “Breath from the Depths,” now elderly, Lola “wanted to die” (57). No matter how hard she focused on dying, her body kept living. In order to give death “a final push,” she decided to make a list (57). The list had five goals: “Classify everything. Donate what is expendable, Wrap what is important. Concentrate on death. If he meddles, ignore him” (58). She focused on it when she felt upset.
Lola’s husband arranged everything “the way Lola liked” (59). She studied him, realizing he was her life. He took care of everything for her. He always did the shopping. Lola refused to go to the supermarket after the day of the incident. Sometimes he bought the cocoa her late son used to drink “before he got sick” and passed away (61).
