Tia Williams' novel Seven Days in June is written from the third person point view and set in New York City. The novel follows a linear structure, which relies upon the seven days of the week for its formal inspiration. The author nuances this structure via repeated shifts into the past. The following summary employs the present tense and a linear mode of explanation.
Eva Mercy grows up with her mother Lizette. Never having known her father, Eva gets used to her mother's steady string of abusive boyfriends. Whenever Lizette's boyfriends promise Lizette a new life, Lizette moves Eva to yet another city. Over the years, Eva learns what it means to be alone. Despite her self-reliance, however, when Eva is a senior in high school, she grows tired of her loneliness and emotional turmoil. Her grades are suffering, her migraines are worsening, and her home life is increasingly traumatic. In order to stave off the pain associated with these conflicts, Eva grows reliant upon painkillers.
Then one day Eva decides that she needs to make a friend. She first sees Shane Hall reading a book on the school bleachers. They start talking and realize they have a lot in common. Shane also has a complicated home life. He also feels like an outsider in social contexts.
Eva and Shane start spending time at an abandoned mansion. While here, they take drugs and drink to excess. Eva also cuts herself to soothe her emotional distress. Though the friends often worry about one another, they also know they are trying to survive. One day while at the house, Eva overdoses. Terrified, Shane calls Lizette. Believing Shane hurt Eva, Lizette turns him into the police.
Decades later, Eva and Shane have learned to live without one another. Since high school, Eva has gone to rehab, attended college, won a writing contest, and signed a book deal. The book deal makes her a sensation in the world of erotic literature. Over the years, Eva continues expanding her Cursed series. Though she feels conflicted about the work, she also knows the books have sustained her. She lives with her daughter, Audre, in Park Slope, Brooklyn. Outside of writing, Eva has few friends and does little to expand her social life.
Meanwhile, Shane has worked hard to get sober. Though he feels better, his writing career is struggling. He is famous for his published works but has no idea what to write next. Writing sober is something he has never done before. In order to give himself purpose, he begins mentoring underprivileged students. Eventually he decides he must go to New York to make amends with Eva.
Eva and Shane unexpectedly reunite at the State of the Black Author panel at the Brooklyn Museum. Eva is overwhelmed. Though she fears who she might become in Shane's presence again, Eva agrees to spend time with him. Over the course of the following days, the old friends attempt to confront their past and build a new connection in the present.
Eva knows she is still susceptible to Shane's charms. Shane is also still in love with Eva. He also cares for her daughter, and sees the three of them creating a new family together. However, Eva is still afraid that Shane will disappear from her life again. She is unsure how to let her relationships coexist.
The morning that Audre travels to California to visit her dad for the summer, Shane is supposed to meet Eva and Audre for breakfast. He fails to appear, having had to rush off for one of his students at the last minute. Not having heard from Shane excites Eva's emotions. She feels hurt all over again. After dropping Audre at the airport, Eva goes home to write. In the process, she discovers the story she has wanted to tell for many years.
Eva and Shane finally talk and explain themselves. They then spend some time apart. Though they are not sharing the same physical location, they continue communicating via text. Once they are finally reunited, they decide to give their relationship another chance.
